James Russell - Guitar Instructor
James Russell has been playing and performing for over forty years. His formal music education began when he was eleven years old. He was fortunate that his guitar teacher at that time taught him sight reading and solo guitar arranging from piano music. By the time he was twelve years old he was playing and performing in local rock bands. In high school in southern California, James played guitar in the high school jazz stage band as well as performed guitar in school Broadway review plays.
He majored in music in college, studying classical guitar, playing flute in the college orchestra, and singing in the college choir. During this time James was also playing guitar and composing in progressive rock bands. In his early twenties James studied with Carl Verheyen, guitarist for Supertramp, Disney studio guitarist, and L.A. session guitar king.
James has been performing solo guitar, especially for business and private dinner parties, weddings, and other special events, for over twenty-five years. He plays many styles, including jazz standards, classical, rock, folk, fingerstyle, and bossa nova. He has taught guitar to students ranging in ages from six to eighty-two. He has a very personal style of teaching and can lead his students in various directions and help them learn according to their interests, level, and personal goals. He teaches sight reading for those who wish to learn.
James is also a guitar maker of acoustic and electric guitars, basses, and ukuleles. His acoustic guitars include classical, parlor to jumbo steel string guitars, nylon string slack key guitars, and amplified hybrid nylon string guitars. His electric guitars include Tele-style, Strat-style, and other hollow body electrics. He also makes archtops, electric basses, and ukuleles.
