Here are a few of the basic steps to having a good stage performance.
From the moment you step on stage your presence is important. A relaxed, confident feeling is a good start. Keep your body angled forward so people can see you well. Sharing the stage with other members is a must If a member has a solo, you want to step back and watch the soloist or walk back stage.
Nobody can afford to lose their audiences attention. Confusion can arise on stage when the band is trying to decide what song to play next. Try to keep three songs ahead of what you're playing so you can just count them off and go. Better yet, decide on a well paced set list. Follow it to cut down on dead time and confusion. If you talk to the band or crowd between songs, keep things moving forward so your performance stays focused.
The correct way to stand when singing is feet apart slightly, standing on the balls of your feet, back straight, arms relaxed. Now you're ready to attack.
Communicating with the audience is important. People like to feel welcome and part of the show. Sing to your audience. Look them in the eye and really convey the song. If you feel comfortable going into the audience to sing, even better. This a very personal touch that singer Helynn Miller of Helynnback used to involve the audience. There are also many talented actors and actresses that sing and dance at the Phoenix Theater. These people know how to keep your attention.
Always try to stay level headed up on stage. Never let them see you sweat the small stuff. The only sweat they should see is after singing a truly beautiful song. Remember, love, laughter and respect will be your most important tools to take with you wherever you go.
